South Carinthia region

From Ferlach, you can follow the Drava through South Carinthia as far as the Slovenian border. The stages are characterised by wonderful views of the Karawanks, enjoyable stops along the river and a few trip destinations for adults and children. In the process, the landscape around the river changes repeatedly. While after Ferlach the Drava is marked by banks abundantly covered in vegetation and a few bends, after the Annabrücke bridge it becomes increasingly wide and straight. In Völkermarkt, the water body is a calm reservoir with seemingly endless long-distance views and a direct connection to the city. The further the Drava goes to the south, the closer hills and mountains come to the river bank. From the expanse, paddlers reenter a dense green section, surrounded by idyllic little villages and unforgettable nature experiences.

One satage leads you from the gunsmith town of Ferlach in the Rosental, Annabrücke to Seidendorf in South Carinthia, where you can treat yourself to a coffee on the sunny terrace in a cut-off lake of the Drau right on the river bank. But until then, immerse yourself deeply in nature during many meditative paddle strokes. On the way, you will no doubt catch one or two brilliant panoramic views of the river and the Karawanks.

The next stage is again something for those who like to enjoy calm paddling. From Seidendorf it goes straight onto the Völkermarkt Reservoir, where there are quite lively happenings on the water. Fishermen throw their rods into the river, various boats chug around and aquatic birds settle down near the bank. Since this stage is somewhat shorter, afterwards there is still sufficient time to explore the area and go on a trip.

The blue of the water, the green on the riverbank. And the rhythmic hitting of the paddles. This stage has a really decelerating effect and connects body, mind and soul with nature. The embarking point is located on the left-hand river bank after the Annabrücke power plant. The stage begins here and takes you on a leisurely 7.1 kilometres, or 1.5 to 2 hours, to Seidendorf. On the way, the Drava takes in the river Gurk. Thus, paddlers can experience various landscape scenes. While the first part seems almost like a narrow canal, the Drava widens out extensively again in the last third. The panorama opens up. It goes past idyllic meadow landscapes and romantic bays. Birds can repeatedly be observed on the bank. And towards the end also the fishermen who like to cast their rods in Seidendorf. In Seidendorf, the disembarking and embarking points are found on the right-hand riverbank. Water body: very lightly flowing, still in the water storage areas.

Drava power plant

The safety zone before and after the power plants is 300 metres. The safety zone must be observed without exception; when the locks are open there is mortal danger!

There are no further power plants on this stage.

Rest area

In this stage, you can paddle through easily without taking long breaks. However, if you would like to dock briefly, you can do so again on the left-hand side of the river after the Annabrücke power plant. In between times you can, though, also take the paddle in and simply let yourself be driven along a bit by the river.

Accommodation & cuisine

In this stage, there are good catering and accommodation options at the beginning and end of the tour. There are a few nicely maintained farms, smaller bed and breakfasts and holiday homes nearby. Everything seems homely and familiar. Gourmets and lovers of terraces with ample views can stop at Fishery Steffan, on the right in a cut-off lake of the Drava. The local fish tastes wonderful here and is the perfect conclusion to the tour right by the water.

While the previous stages were characterised by many meditative paddle strokes, things become a bit livelier again at Völkermarkt Reservoir. But first, you need to make your way there slowly on the river. You embark in Seidendorf, from where you paddle the first part through a green natural paradise. Here, the river is narrow and the untouched river bank very close by. However, with each kilometre travelled, the river opens up – widening into the Völkermarkt Reservoir. You can experience the landscape from a wide angle perspective. On the river bank you can discover small harbours, stately castles and dreamy villages with small churches, bordered by the mountains to the south. Again and again, a small boat, a fisherman or aquatic birds come towards you. Once you have gone under the bridge, you have almost reached your destination. The stage ends before the Edling power plant, at the left-hand river bank at Dullach harbour, right under the old ducal town of Völkermarkt. Depending on whether you sail straight ahead or take a zigzag course over the reservoir, you need 3 to 3.5 hours for this stage, which is approximately 15,5 kilometres long. Water body: very lightly flowing, still in the water storage areas.

Drava power plant

The safety zone before and after the power plants is 300 metres. The safety zone must be observed without exception; when the locks are open there is mortal danger!

The Edling power plant is located at the end of the stage. Here you can leave the water either at Dullach harbour or shortly afterwards, also on the left-hand side of the river, in order to embark again on the left-hand side after the power plant and continue your journey. A special boat trolley, which you receive from us at the start of the stage, makes transporting the boat, canoe, kayak or SUP no problem. The embarking and disembarking points are marked.

Currently, our end point is at Dullach harbour. Look forward to 2021 – when the Drava paddling route will be extended to Lavamünd.

Rest area

After the start in Seidendorf, you will find the rest area at Schreckendorf harbour to your right. From Dullach harbour II you can explore Schloss Neudenstein. You can dock in St. Lorenzen, swim in the Völkermarkt Reservoir and enjoy the nature. Once you have arrived at Völkermarkt harbour, there are a few opportunities to stop for something to eat and to explore the town before resuming the journey up to the end of the stage at Dullach harbour.

Trip destinations & tips

Even from a distance, Neudenstein Castle can be seen on a rocky hill on the north side. Due to its appearance, the locals also sometimes call it the “black castle”. It is possible to undertake a few small hikes around the castle, such as into the nature preserve. From the elevated location, you have a wonderful view down onto the reservoir. Those with a sweet tooth can stop at the organic honey manufactory at Lake Klopein and take goodies from the region home with them. Lake Klopein also offers many leisure and culinary opportunities. Charming old town flair awaits you on a stroll through Völkermarkt.
